Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS SINGLE TAPE VERSION!
Comment: Everything that is said about this program is true - Great story, acting, scenery, etc.

However you may be disappointed if you buy this particular Anchor Bay release on single cassette.
I had been looking at several places with 3 tape sets and did not notice this one was "single tape"
My mistake! - product was exactly as the seller advertised - I just didn't look closely enough.

Anchor Bay did a bad job of transferring the film to begin with, then crammed it on to a single 6 hr EP/SLP tape.
The result is blurry and while some scenes are washed out, others are too dark or the colors over-saturated.
There is also a decided "red" cast to everything (no, it's not the Australian dirt).
Sound is also mediocre

A EP/SLP tape is scanned at 1/3 the speed of a 2 hr SP tape, this reduces the level of detail possible.
In addition, there are only 250 lines of resolution to a SP VHS image - about 1/2 the 480 of a standard tv broadcast
When SLP is used, it is reduced even more to 230 lines - This means even when brand new, this will have been the worst quality available.

Save your money and search for a release on 3 SP cartridges.
All the releases available seem to be from Anchor Bay - doubt they did any remastering for later releases, so those quality issues may still exist.
The 3 tape versions should still playback at a higher quality - all we can hope for unless a dvd is ever released.

Summary: A Town Like Alice
Comment: A great story based on a person interviewed by Nevil Shute. The women interviewed was Dutch and she was in Java when the Japanese took over. Shute changes the people from Dutch to British and has a group of women and children being moved from one place to another, walking all the way, through Java. The Japanese did not know what to do with these people and assigned a couple of guards to lead them to nowhere. There were many stories along the way which included Australian prisoners and natives who finally allowed them to stay in their village. The love story is believable and the two people involved are followed long after the Japanese have surrendered and they are home. A very good story based loosley on fact. Would recommend this series.

Summary: Desperately seeking this on DVD
Comment: I would dearly love to purchase this series on DVD - for personal reasons really as my late father acted in a scene with Bryan Brown and Gordon Jackson and I would love for my three youngest children to see him in this as he died before they were born.
He is the waiter serving them in the scene in the restaurant where Brown and Jackson are at dinner - it was actually filmed at a building in Macquarie Street Sydney. I am willing to pay up to A$50.00 - anyone wanting hundreds can forget it.
Thankyou for any help.

Summary: when a book equals in quality the TV serie
Comment: Nevil Shute's book is a great novel, not enough recognized to my personal point of view,
over the years adaptations from books to TV or Cinema have been struggling to pass on the emotions, the visuals of strong characters, the essence of the countries/landscapes/properties in the back ground. Gone with the wind is different from the book but stand by itself as a movie. A town like Alice (VHS only as there is no release in DVD of the TV serie) is a absolute success to pass on the emotions and the visuals from the book to TV.
the book is pure pleasure and the TC serie is giving you back the same reward.
thanks to this TV serie, we can forget the terrible cinema adaptation which could have only benefit to have a different name from the book instead to be the perfect example of adaptation's failure.
It would be so much deserved if this was available in DVD for a wider audience.
